Taste of Fall

Thursday, September 28th, 2017
Black-throated Green Warbler, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 28 September 2017.

Black-throated Green Warbler.

The weather has changed. You can tell a cold font’s about to arrive. This morning the wind had changed direction, and the sky had filled with clouds, and the birds seemed scarce and nervous.

Ruby-crowned Kinglet, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 28 September 2017.

Ruby-crowned Kinglet.

Until dog and I got nearly back to the Beech Hill parking lot, when suddenly we encountered a little fallout. Warblers mostly—yellow-rump, a Black-throated Blue, a Black-throated Green. Also a kinglet or two.

A hawk on the hill, a hawk in town, a brisk, fragrant breeze.

The taste of fall.
