And So It Begins Anew

Saturday, April 21st, 2018
Yellow-rumped Warbler, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 21 April 2018.

Yellow-rumped Warbler.

Despite a northwest wind, signs of migration continue. First of year Broad-winged Hawk this morning, along with a little gang of Yellow-rumped Warblers. The resident ravens are being rather croaky, to. You can almost hear the coming spring explosion.

Plus, I saw a butterfly.

And so it begins anew.

Chase of the Ravens.

Tuesday, April 3rd, 2018
Common Raven, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 03 April 2018.

Common Raven.

An exciting morning on the hill today. Sun and breeze and a pair of ravens engaged in a dramatic mating chase. Also an eagle getting hollered at by a pair of herring gulls, singing song sparrows and phoebes.

Ah, April in Maine.

Harrier on a Hunt

Monday, April 2nd, 2018
Northern Harrier, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 02 April 2017.

Northern Harrier.

Some early busyness delayed my hike with dog until mid-morning today—a nippy, overcast morning. Heard singing Song Sparrows for the first time this year (three of ’em). Spotted two first-of-year-species: American Kestrel and Eastern Phoebe. But the highlight was the harrier that came sailing low and wheeling in a short dive to pluck a vole from the field.

Eastern Phoebe, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 02 April 2017.

Eastern Phoebe.

I watched her flap away carrying the vole in her right talon.

(At least I assume it was a vole.)
