Robins and Such

Chickadee with tasty morsel, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 19 January 2018.

Black-capped Chickadee (with tasty morsel).

A teensy bit of snow this morning. Temps in the 20s (F). Dog and I hit the hill to find a couple friends meeting there for a hike. We hung back so they could catch up, and I saw (among other things) the first good-sized flock of robins on the hill this winter.

Back home, the resident cardinals were lurking in the bushes, and I heard (but did not see) the distinctive call of a Pileated Woodpecker nearby.

Warmth and Wind and Corvids

Saturday, January 13th, 2018
Raven in the fog, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 13 January 2018.

Raven in the fog.

Rained overnight. A lot. And wind—so dang windy. Wind howling in the eaves and roaring in the night trees. Was supposed to rain all morning, too, but it’d let up by the time Jack and I were ready to hike.

The temperature had risen into the 50s (F) by then, too, and the snow was gone. All except for plow piles and a few shade drifts. Muddy and warm and windy. I wore ice cleats, which helped the climb. I heard a crow, and a raven flew by, and , and I heard a jay. Ravens love to fly in the wind, by the way.

As forecast, the temperature has plummeted tonight. Single digits are not out of the question.

Evaporation

Black-capped Chickadee, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 12 January 2017.

Black-capped Chickadee.

Temps rising into the 40s (F) today, with a good breeze and an occasional drizzle. Outside, thick mists rose from remnant snow banks and floated away in the wind. A ghostly evaporation. Several mostly smaller birds took advantage of the warmth to hold little browsing parties.

Ghostly mist, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 12 January 2017.

Ghostly mist.

Tonight we’re having a soaking rain. How swiftly the snow recedes.
