Bufflehead Undaunted

Bufflehead (male), Rockport Harbor, Rockport, Maine, 20 January 2018.

Bufflehead (male).

The air smelled clean, the breeze brought a chill, the temperature hovered above freezing. Several skittish birds on the hill, and a bunch of ducks at the harbor. I took a particular fancy to a male Bufflehead diving among a huge raft of mallards. Undaunted little guy had work to do.

Red-tailed Hawk, Route 17, Rockport, Maine, 11 January 2018.

Red-tailed Hawk.

Thaw today. Slushy snow, but not hard walking. Big breeze, but not too cold. Heard two birds but didn’t see a one. Had to make a trip to Portland.

Thought to bring my camera, though, and just as dog and I headed out of town, I saw a handsome Red-tailed Hawk perched along the highway, surveying a field emerging from snow. Pulled over and got a shot or two just as it circled away.

Bald Eagle (adult), Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 20 December 2017.

Bald Eagle.

Windy, windy morning. Cloudless. Not too cold. But Jack and I delayed our hike a bit, because we learned 0f a plan for a wedding proposal at the summit at 10 a.m. We met the smiling couple as they descended, and I offered congratulations, and I told them of the handsome Bald Eagle I’d just seen flying over—and we all agreed it was a good sign.
