Fly Hatch

Cedar Waxwing, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 17 August 2017.

Cedar Waxwing.

Scores of waxwings fluttered about the hill this morning, chasing flies. A wind blew, so the swarms floated diffusely, so the birds wheeled and hovered, flycatching. At the summit I spied a couple phoebes and heard the notes of a Least Flycatcher.

Eastern Phoebe, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 17 August 2017.

Crickets, dragonflies, grasshoppers, cicadas, butterflies (including a couple monarchs), bees, and flies.

Dragonflies

White-faced Meadowhawk, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 14 August 2017.

White-faced Meadowhawk.

Got to the hill at 8:30 this morning, only to discover I’d forgotten my GoPro. False start! Returned at about 9 a.m., and commenced to hiking with dog. Three hawk species today (making that five species in the past two days). Also a bunch of dragonflies.

I kinda love dragonflies.

Hawks

Sunday, August 13th, 2017
Red-shouldered Hawk (immature), Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 13 August 2017.

Red-shouldered Hawk (immature).

This morning on the hill I saw two pairs of immature buteos—Red-shouldered Hawks and Broad-winged Hawks—and one smaller, unidentified raptor (possibly a Cooper’s Hawk). Hawks on the move, and young songbirds persisting.

It’s mid-August, and the brains of the birds are beginning twitch in anticipation..
