Raven in the Rain

Monday, May 1st, 2017
Crown and raven, Beech Hil Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 01 May 2017.

Crown and raven.

Checked the weather radar.
Timed my hike with dog.
Got a little drizzle,
Got some mist and fog

Raven on the barren, Beech Hil Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 01 May 2017.

Raven on the barren.

Then I heard a raven
Croaking in distress
As a crow dive-bombed it—
Nest concerns, I guess.

Had a little scuffle,
Then the crow withdrew.
Raven zipped around us,
Settling in the dew

Of a barren russet
Under skies of gray,
Where it searched for something
In last summer’s hay.

Then it flew away.

Dueling Cardinals

Friday, April 21st, 2017
Northern Cardinal (female), Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 21 April 2017.

Northern Cardinal.

Cardinals sang from every snag,
it seemed, as dog and I hiked up.
Sweet notes—repeated, slow and quick—
pledged love, laid claim to kingdoms.

As later we descended,
a pair of males began to duel.
They veered and swirled, a frantic chase,
They hollered at each other.

Finally they paused to rest
a foot apart, glaring, staring,
before the interloper fled.
The king his queen defended.

Titmouse Obsessed

Friday, April 14th, 2017
Tufted Titmouse, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 14 April 2017.

Tufted Titmouse.

Titmouse came too close
For focus so I took
A photo of its tail.

(This Tufted Titmouse seemed absolutely fascinated by Jack. He came very near, studied my dog from all directions, even followed us up the hill a ways. I’ve seen curious birds a time or two—but I’d never seen such apparently obsessive behavior.)
