14 April 2003 Rockport, Maine, USA

A downy woodpecker stopped by this morning. Downys are such tiny things—barely larger than a nuthatch—and easy to overlook in the high branches. I watched this one forage quietly in the bark, flitting from tree to tree, until it disappeared up the hill somewhere. Soon after, I heard its loud drumming on a hollow limb. A big noise for such a little bird.
